A New York man was arrested Wednesday on Main Street in Bangor in connection to alleged drug trafficking in Penobscot and Hancock counties, according to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Jeremy Cruz, 28, of Bronx, New York, was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, a Class A crime, according to the MDEA.
Cruz remained Sunday at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor unable to post $30,000 cash bail, according to jail personnel.
His arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation focused on the growing presence of out-of-state drug traffickers in Hancock County and other parts of Maine, the MDEA said.
Cruz is facing an aggravated trafficking charge because one of his drug sales allegedly took place within 1,000 feet of a safe zone — a place where children congregate such as a park or school.
If convicted, Cruz faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and Bangor police assisted in the investigation. More arrests are likely, according to the MDEA.
The MDEA did not say if Cruz’s arrest was connected to the Thursday arrests in Bangor of Peter Spann and Diane Spann, both 54, accused of selling heroin out of their Ohio Street apartment.
People who have information about the investigation involving the Spanns or the illegal sale of drugs in the state are urged to call the MDEA tipline at 800-452-6457.
