Camden Hills of Rockport captured its first Class A state championship in girls cross-country while Orono won the Class C crown for the fourth time in the last five years during competition Saturday at the Twin Brook Recreation Area in Cumberland.

Yarmouth was the Class B winner for the second time in three years.

Camden Hills, competing in Class A for the first time this fall, used the 2-3 individual finishes of junior Augusta Stockman and sophomore Grace Iltis as the foundation for its successful debut.

The Windjammers, the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Class A North champions, finished with 73 points to score a comfortable victory over runner-up and host Greely (107), with Falmouth (131), Deering of Portland (136) and Bonny Eagle of Standish (140) completing the top five.

Stockman and Iltis trailed only race winner Sophie Matson, a freshman from Falmouth who finished the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 41.60 seconds.

Sophomore Miranda Dunton was next for Camden Hills in 14th place, with freshmen Claire Wyman (24th overall) and Rose O’Brien (40th) completing the youthful champions’ scoring contingent.

The Class C team competition couldn’t have been closer, with Orono edging second-place Maranacook of Readfield by a single point, 71-72, and 2016 state champion George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (79) and Maine Coast Waldorf School of Freeport (88) also close behind.

Junior Camille Kohtala finished second to pace the champion Red Riots, trailing only race winner Olivia Reynolds of Maine Coast Waldorf (20:13.10).

But Kohtala edged GSA’s Eliza Broughton by 0.16 second, and while it wasn’t known at the time that ultimately constituted the extra point Orono needed to win the team title — had the Red Riots and Maranacook finished tied in the scoring, Maranacook would have won the sixth-place tiebreaker.

Orono freshman Erin Gerbi finished fourth overall, with senior Liza Gallandt (14th), freshman Julia White (25th) and senior Kaili Gaetjen (27th) completing the Red Riots’ scorers.

Gaetjen and Gallandt also edged the nearest finishers behind them by narrow margins, Gaetjen by 1.32 seconds and Gallandt by 1.9 seconds.

Maranacook had three runners among the top dozen finishers: Molly McGrail (sixth), Sophie O’Clair (11th) and Laura Parent (12th).

Zeya Lorio and Mary Richardson finished ninth and 10th in support of Broughton’s effort for GSA.

Seniors Sophia Lankli and Anneka Murrin finished second and fourth to lead Yarmouth to the Class B crown.

The Clippers finished with 67 points, followed by York (85), Caribou (104), Cape Elizabeth (133) and Ellsworth (138) as the top five teams.

Senior Kathryn Miller’s fifth-place effort paced York while sophomore Abigail Wimmer led Caribou — the Class B North champion — with her sixth-place finish. Other top runners for Caribou were junior Ashley Violette (21st) and freshman Kacie Haney (23rd).

Sophomores Trinity Montigny and Caitlin MacPherson finished seventh and eighth to lead Ellsworth.

Junior Lily Horne of Freeport took individual honors in 19:10.85.
