An elderly woman died Monday night after driving southbound in the northbound lane of Route 1 in Brunswick, colliding head on with a minivan.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing her identity until they notify her family, according to a news release from Brunswick police.

The collision happened around 7:50 p.m. in the divided section of Route 1 near Cook’s Corner. Police received a call about a sedan driving the wrong way on the highway, but were not able to get to the scene before the crash occurred.

Two adults in the minivan were taken to Mid Coast Hospital and one teenage passenger was taken to Maine Medical Center.

Route 1 northbound was closed for about 40 minutes and was reopened to one-lane traffic as police continued their investigation.
