A gas leak closed Bangor City Hall for about 40 minutes Wednesday morning.

Employees evacuated the building just after 8:10 a.m., when a construction worker operating a skid steer tractor called the fire department to say he hit a natural gas line behind the building, according Assistant Fire Chief Anthony Ritano.

The worker was part of the crew repairing a retaining wall on Park Street, he said.

People were allowed to re-enter the building just before 9 a.m., when firefighters and workers from Bangor Natural Gas determined it was safe, according to Firefighter Jim Fleming.

Bangor Natural Gas remained on the scene to repair the line, and firefighters were still using meters to check for pockets of gas at around 9 a.m.

No employees reported feeling sick, Ritano said.
