Service members, veterans and local dignitaries gathered on the Willard Carlton Orr Bridge in Bangor on Thursday to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
The footbridge honors a Bangor High School graduate and the only Mainer killed in the Dec. 7. 1941 attack, which claimed 2,403 American lives, Mayor Ben Sprague said.

The bridge crosses the Kenduskeag, where members of the Navy Operational Support Center laid a wreath to honor the fallen.
“To veterans, [Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day] means a lot,” said Ronald F. Smith, a Vietnam War veteran and quartermaster with VFW post District 4. “There were a lot of sacrifices.”
