Senior forward Jacob Dubay, who led Old Town-Orono to the Class B hockey state championship, was named the Player of the Year in Class B North hockey in a vote among the coaches.
Presque Isle’s Carl Flynn was the Coach of the Year and the league’s sportsmanship award went Hampden Academy.
Dubay was joined on the all-conference first team by teammate Josh Wheeler, a senior defenseman; Hampden Academy senior forward Marcus Dunn and HA sophomore forward Cooper Leland; Kennebec senior defenseman Chase Wheeler and John Bapst of Bangor senior goalie Dan Sprague.
The second team consists of forwards Cody Pellerin of Kennebec, Thomas Patenaude of Presque Isle and Ben Spear of John Bapst; defensemen Jack Watkins from Brewer and Abd Lorom of Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin and goalie Cooper Ryan of Hampden Academy.
Pellerin, Watkins and Lorom are seniors, Patenaude is a junior, Spear is a sophomore and Ryan is a freshman.
The third team is made up of senior forwards Ben Allan-Rahill from Old Town-Orono, Cam Christie of Camden Hills and junior forward Jake Stevens from Presque Isle; senior defensemen Dan Lydon of Camden Hills and sophomore defenseman Antti Jarvikare of Old Town-Orono; and freshman goalie Elijah Matheson from Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin and senior goaltender Matt Czuchra from Camden Hills.
Ryan, Matheson and Jarvikare were on the all-rookie team along with Presque Isle forward Colby Carlisle, Old Town-Orono forward Tanner Evans and Messalonskee of Oakland’s Myles Hammond.
Dubay finished the season with 18 goals and 30 assists for the Black Bears including two assists in the state championship game.
“He’s fast and he plays hard at both ends of the ice,’ Flynn said of Dubay. “He has a heck of a shot and he gets it off quick. He also plays with an edge in a good, competitive way.”
“Every team went after him and double-teamed him so he would dish the puck off and he was very productive when it came to assists,” said Old Town-Orono coach Denis Collins. “He was very fast and you won’t find anyone with a quicker release on his shot. And it was accurate.”
Flynn, in his 13th season at Presque Isle, was named coach of the year for the second time. He led the Wildcats to a 14-7 record and a berth in the regional finals where they lost to Old Town-Orono.
He said assistant coach Darren Carlisle and his players deserve equal credit.
“Carl did a very good job and his team is going to be a force to be reckoned with because they were so young,” said Collins.
Dunn and Leland had exceptional seasons for the Broncos as Dunn had 36 goals and 19 assists and Leland provided 27 & 26. Wheeler (6 & 18) headed up the Old Town-Orono defense corps Sprague helped John Bapst allowed three or fewer goals 12 times in 18 games.
