A driver who was allegedly intoxicated when he crashed into a tree in rural Washington County late last year, killing his 11-year-old daughter, has been indicted for manslaughter.
Christopher A. Stevenson, 45, of Roque Bluffs was indicted by the Washington County grand jury on several charges related to the Dec. 14, 2017, crash in Cathance Township.
Late that night, Stevenson was allegedly intoxicated when he lost control of his 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis while driving south on Route 191 and collided with a tree, according to the indictment and police. His 11-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in his car, died in the collision, according to the indictment and police. It was not immediately clear how intoxicated Stevenson was at the time of the crash or where his daughter was seated in the car.
His attorney, Jeffrey W. Davidson, said a Breathalyzer test indicated Stevenson was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
In addition to manslaughter, Stevenson was indicted this month on charges of aggravated criminal OUI, domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and operating after suspension.
If convicted of manslaughter, the most serious charge, Stevenson faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
Cathance Township is in the Unorganized Territory in Washington County, just north of East Machias.
