Bath police on Monday confirmed that a sick skunk shot by police Wednesday near the Bath Golf Course on Whiskeag Road was rabid.

Animal Control Officer Ann Harford took the carcass to Augusta for testing by the state, which confirmed recently that the animal was rabid, Deputy Chief Robert Savary of the Bath police Department said in a release.

Police urge pet owners to keep animals up to date on vaccinations and limit unsupervised roaming by their pets.
