A Glenburn man has been charged with raping a former girlfriend in her Bangor apartment Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, according to court documents.
John M. Ryan Jr., 28, was arrested Thursday and charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A crime, aggravated assault, a Class B crime, and domestic violence assault, a Class C crime.
Ryan allegedly tried to strangle the victim and broke her wrist during the attack, according to court documents. The victim told police that she had been dating Ryan about a week but broke it off after she found out he had another girlfriend.

On Tuesday night, Ryan came to her apartment drunk, the victim allegedly told Bangor police. She said that he could sleep downstairs on her couch and she went upstairs to watch television, according to court documents. A few hours later Ryan allegedly went upstairs and raped her.
Ryan made his first court appearance Friday afternoon at Penobscot Judicial Center by video conference from the jail before District Court Judge John Martin.
He was not asked Friday to enter pleas to the charges because he has not yet been indicted by a Penobscot County grand jury.
He remained Friday night at Penobscot County Jail unable to post $25,000 cash bail.
Ryan’s next court appearance is Dec. 11.
Martin set bail at the amount requested by Chris Ka Sin Chu, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County. Conditions include no contact with the victim, not to return to her residence, no use of intoxicants and an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.
If convicted, Ryan faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on the most serious charge of gross sexual assault.
