Thursday, Portland firefighters went to the Barron Center to celebrate a big milestone for a retired member of the department.
Former firefighter Anthony Peverada turned 100 years old Thursday.
Peverada joined the fire department back in 1950. He served at several stations around the city for 24 years, retiring in 1974.
The Portland Fire Department says the department turned 250 years old in March, and they say it’s a rare opportunity to meet a fellow firefighter who’s part of that long history.
“To be able to have this opportunity to see one of our own members turn 100 years old and to think he’s alive for as long as half as long we’ve been around, what a special time to do that,” Fire Chief Keith Gautreau said.
Peverada served with Engine Company Number 9, located on Forest Avenue.

Members of that company, among others, were on hand for Thursday’s celebration.
When someone asked Peverada how it feels to be 100 years old, he responded: “No different than yesterday.”
