–A group of residents want to spare the former Ticonic 4 firehouse on Route 1A from demolition. But the city’s Board of Appeals said it didn’t have the authority to revoke the city-issued demolition permit and that it was a matter for the city council. Now, the city council is uncertain it has the authority to revoke the permit, and its lawyers have a conflict of interest.

A ‘grand experiment’ in sober living has just opened in Bangor

–When Scott Pardy volunteered at the Penobscot County Jail, he witnessed a particular cycle of addiction: inmates getting sober behind bars, being released and returning to their old lives because they had no other option. So he did something about it. He bought a house and rehabbed it. Five men in recovery now live there.

–The Sears Auto Center store at the mall will close for good at 6 p.m. today, but anchor store JC Penney has agreed to a new multiyear lease, the facility’s new manager said Tuesday.

Industry experts have pointed to the status of JC Penney, as well as fellow anchor Dick’s Sporting Goods, as an indicator for whether the shopping center can bounce back after a troubling few years.

Haven’t got your deer yet? Here are some tips to change your luck.

–It seems it was just yesterday when Maine’s deer hunters eagerly hopped out of bed to celebrate opening morning by heading into the woods. And here we are, somehow, staring down the barrel of the last week of the firearms deer season: deerless, again.

Nathan Bieber, the deer biologist for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, passed along these late-season tips to help tip the scales in your favor in your quest to find a buck over the next few days.
