A grand opening ceremony was held Thursday in Portland for a new senior living community.

The former Sisters of Mercy Convent on Stevens Avenue has become The Motherhouse at Stevens Square.

It offers Portland residents 55 years or older affordable housing and a great quality of life.

Restoring the convent was no easy task.

The convent, an iconic landmark, was built in 1909 to house the nuns of the Sisters of Mercy, and provide a home for aging women.

After 100 years in operation, the convent closed in 2004 because of declining numbers and costly repairs.
