Alfred “Bunky” Dow, the longtime student activities director at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor, is one of 11 high school athletic administrators from around the country who have been named recipients of the 2018 Distinguished Service Awards presented by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Dow will be honored Dec. 18 in San Antonio, Texas, during the 49th annual National Athletic Directors Conference conducted jointly by the National Federation of State High School Associations and the NIAAA.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals from within the NIAAA membership in recognition of their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels.

Nominations are submitted by state athletic directors associations, screened by the NIAAA Awards Committee and selected by the NIAAA board of directors.

Dow has served at MDI for the past 28 years at his alma mater, and he also has coached several sports and been active with the Maine Principals’ Association and the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Dow’s coaching experience was highlighted by his 14 years as the Trojans’ varsity baseball coach from 1988 to 2002. He also was an assistant football coach for seven years, freshman basketball coach for nine years and junior varsity girls soccer coach for two years.

As athletic administrator, Dow has led renovations to the school’s gymnasium, track and tennis courts. He also established the school’s hall of fame and the Mt. Desert Island Unsung Hero Award.

Since 1990, Dow has been secretary of the school’s athletic conference as well as a chairperson for the conference’s basketball, baseball, softball, cheering and outdoor track committees.

Dow has served on the MPA’s cheering, softball and advisory committees, and he chairs the organization’s classification committee and is a member of the MPA Rules Review Committee.

His state service also includes a stint on the MIAAA board of directors. Dow also serves as the MIAAA’s associate director and chair of state awards. He was MIAAA president for 2003-2004.

Dow received the NFHS Citation and the MIAAA Robert Lahey Athletic Administrator of the Year Award for Maine in 2014, and in 2016 he received the Gerry Durgin Excellence in Leadership Award.

Dow earned his Certified Athletic Administrator designation in 1999 and received the NIAAA State Award of Merit in 2011. He also received a Special Achievement Award from the MIAAA.

After graduating from MDI High School in 1978, Dow earned his bachelor’s degree from Husson College in Bangor.
