When the weather gets frightful, that means it’s time to start planning for the next season’s fly-fishing adventures. A couple of local groups have organized fly-tying sessions in the coming weeks.
First up, let’s talk about the Penobscot Fly Fishers. Their popular Monday night beginners classes kick off on Jan. 7, and the class is limited to 30 students — first come, first served. The cost for the six-week program is $50. The use of all tools and materials is covered by the course fee.
That class will be held at the Penobscot County Conservation Association clubhouse in Brewer, runs from about 6 to 8 p.m. Students will get plenty of hands-on instruction, and will learn basic techniques that they’ll be able to use for the rest of their fly-tying careers. If you’re interested, reach out to Rob Dunnett at class@penobscotflyfishers.com. Students younger than 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
Across the river in Veazie, the members of the Veazie Salmon Club are staging free Monday night tying sessions, and beginners or experienced tiers are welcome to attend. Tiers can bring their own gear or use the club’s equipment. All sessions start at 6 p.m., but tying won’t take place on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. Responsible consumption of adult beverages is allowed, but coffee and other drinks will be available.
The club is located at 30 Old County Road in Veazie. According to Bob Wengrzynek of the Veazie Salmon Club, there is no set end date for the tying sessions — a decision on that will be made at a future date.
