The University of Maine has signed a player from Football Bowl Subdivision school the University of Louisville.
Ori Jean-Charles, who saw action on special teams in two games for the Cardinals, has joined the Black Bears as a midyear transfer.
The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Jean-Charles, who was a redshirt freshman last season was listed as defensive back on the Louisville roster. UMaine is projecting him as a tight end.
The Monsey, New York, native was a quarterback at Spring Valley High School where he threw for 1,429 yards and 20 touchdowns his junior year. He also rushed for 1,009 yards and five touchdowns.
The Black Bears graduated their two tight ends in Drew Belcher and Julian Dunn.
Belcher, a converted quarterback, was the team’s third-leading receiver last season with 46 receptions for 357 yards and a touchdown. Dunn had seven catches for 89 yards and a TD.
UMaine won the Colonial Athletic Association championship in 2018 and reached the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals for the first time in program history.
UMaine, which finished at 10-4, will return eight starters on offense and eight on defense next fall along with its punter and place-kicker.
