A lobster boat based in Rockport was destroyed last week when it broke from its mooring and wound up smashed against rocks on an island 10 miles away.
La Boat III, owned by Daniel Dodge, was found by North Haven residents on Friday morning, broken against rocks on a part of the island known as “Stand In Point,” according to Maine Marine Patrol Sgt. Matt Talbot.
The 38-foot lobster boat was tied Thursday to a float in a part of Rockport harbor near where the Goose River empties. Talbot said this part of the harbor is a common place for fishermen to tie up boats.
While Thursday night wasn’t particularly windy, Talbot said the heavy rains could have made the Goose River swell and break the boat from its mooring.
By the time the boat was found on North Haven, it had been blown repeatedly against the rocky shore. Talbot said the 40-year-old boat was destroyed.
“When it’s getting blown on the beach like that, there’s not a whole lot you can do,” Talbot said.
