More than a dozen dogs have gotten sick this winter after walking along a popular New Hampshire beach.
Since Nov. 19, 2018, numerous dogs have gotten sick after eating something on a stretch on ocean front between Wallis Road and Wallis Sands State Beach, according to the Rye Police Department.
Of the 14 cases reported to Rye police, one dog has died after getting sick along that stretch of beach.
Dog owners have turned in a treat-like item found on the beach to Rye police, who said a laboratory examination of the dead dog and the treat-like item detected caffeine. Further testing will be conducted, Rye police said.
Caffeine can be life-threatening to dogs, according to petpoisonhelpline.com. Signs of caffeine poisoning include vomiting, elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms and seizures.
The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call 603-964-5522 or send a tip to Seacoast Crime Stoppers.
