A Massachusetts teen faces a list of charges after police say he led officers on a 40-mile high-speed chase across two states.
The 17-year-old from Malden, who does not have a driver’s license and has not been identified because he is a juvenile, faces charges of failure to stop for police, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, speeding, failure to signal and operating without headlights, among other charges, according to Massachusetts State Police.
It began about 12:15 a.m. Monday when a woman flagged down a Massachusetts state trooper on Interstate 93 in Medford to report that her red 2014 Toyota Camry had been stolen in nearby Malden, according to state police.
Troopers found the Toyota driving northbound on Interstate 95 in Wakefield, and when troopers activated their emergency lights, the teen slowed down in the breakdown lane before taking off at a high speed, state police said.
Police deployed spike mats to disable the Toyota, but the teen maneuvered around them and continued to evade police and at times turned off the Toyota’s lights as he headed north on the highway, according to state police.
State troopers and local police chased the Toyota north on I-95 until it crossed the state line into Seabrook, New Hampshire, about 12:48 a.m., and New Hampshire state and local police took up the chase.
The Toyota exited I-95 onto Route 101 in Hampton before crashing as the 17-year-old attempted to exit onto Route 11 in Stratham, according to state police. The teen fled the scene on foot, but was capture about 1:10 a.m. by Stratham police.
