The University of Maine women swimmers reside in fifth place and the men are seventh following the first day of competition at the ECAC Championships hosted by the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Army West Point leads the 17-team women’s field and the Midshipmen lead the 20-team men’s competition.
Black Bears Juliana McDonald (23.2-second leg), Maggie White (25), Emma Blair (23.2) and Ines Khiyara (24.3) finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1 minute, 35.8 seconds.
For the UMaine men, Andy Sprague (20.9), Cameron Kubik (20.6), Nick Gould (21.7) and Coulter Morrill (21.0) swam a 1:24.3 good for sixth place in the 200 free relay.
McDonald finished seventh in the women’s 200 individual medley (2:08) and Kubik was 11th in the men’s 200 IM at 1:52.8.
In the 50 free, Sprague swam a 20.8 in the men’s race for eighth place while Blair tied for 10th at 23.8 in the women’s 50 free event.
The UMaine men’s 400 medley relay squad finished ninth at 3:37.5 as did the women (3:55.8).
Competition continues Saturday and Sunday.
