A 58-year-old Skowhegan driving teacher was arrested Thursday after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Duane Marquis of Skowhegan was charged with gross sexual assault after admitting to the relationship to Detective Jeremy Leal of the sheriff’s office, Sheriff Dale Lancaster said in a Thursday news release.

The sheriff’s office was told of the alleged relationship by the administration of Carrabec High School in North Anson. Although the student is 18 years old and is legally an adult, Lancaster said, Maine law prohibits sexual relations between a teacher at any elementary or secondary education institution and a student he or she has “instructional, supervisory or disciplinary authority over.”

Marquis was an instructor at Skowhegan Driving School, Lancaster said. Bail was set at $2,500 cash in the case and he is prohibited from having any contact with the alleged victim or the victim’s family, the sheriff said.
Marquis is scheduled to make his first court appearance on May 15.
