By a wide margin at the polls Tuesday, Ogunquit voters approved a zoning change needed for the Ogunquit Playhouse to move forward with a planned renovation and expansion project.

Question 5, which will create the Shoreland General Development 3 zone, was approved by a 415 to 86 margin.

The new zone will bring the property into compliance, protect it as a nonprofit performing arts theater into the future, and pave the way for a major renovation and expansion project. Over recent months, six public meetings were held to answer questions and meet the concerns of town officials and the community before the Select Board unanimously approved sending the proposed zoning change to voters.

“She’s one of the most beloved theater buildings in the world, not in the county, but the world,” Executive Artistic Director Brad Kenney said. “The historic artistic heritage is second to none. We need to restore her to the caliber she once was.”

Town Clerk Chris Murphy said voter turnout was steady throughout the day, with the playhouse question and three contested municipal races bringing residents out to the polls.

In the race for one open seat on the Select Board, Lindsey Perry narrowly beat out Kirk Lavoie by just 10 votes to gain a seat for a three-year term. Perry earned 267 votes to Lavoie’s 257.

Budget board member Carole Aaron was ousted by opponent Thomas Sellers at the polls on Tuesday by a narrow margin. Sellers received 251 votes, to Aaron’s 238.

Boriana Dolliver ran unopposed to retain her seat on the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District board and garnered 144 votes in her favor Tuesday.

Voters supported all articles related to the town’s $9.72 million fiscal year 2020 municipal budget, which represents a 4.37 percent increase over the current budget.
