Maine and New Hampshire are expected to pay $5 million to a contractor to settle the firm’s claim that design deficiencies led to increased costs and delays over the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge.
The bridge replaced an old span that connected Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine, along the Route 1 bypass over the Piscataqua River. It opened March 2018, seven months behind schedule.
The Portland Press Herald reports the contractor, Cianbro, had earlier filed a request to be compensated nearly $17 million. The newspaper cited a memo sent this month from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation to Gov. Chris Sununu and the Executive Council.
The final price of the bridge was $181.2 million, about $4.5 million more than estimated. Both states will share the added construction cost.
