Gov. Janet Mills proposes returning $411 million from the projected government surplus to an estimated 800,000 taxpayers in checks amounting to approximately $500. For the majority of Mainers, I believe that $500 will have little lasting impact.

Why not invest the funds in infrastructure, schools or public health instead? Four hundred and eleven million dollars could have a significant impact on our failing bridges, underfunded K-12 education and frayed health care infrastructure. All of which would bring far greater long term benefit to individual Mainers than a $500 check!
