BANGOR, Maine — It has been a long time since the Wisdom girls basketball team has lost a game.

That trend continued Saturday night as the No. 2 Pioneers rolled to a 63-34 victory over No. 7 Katahdin Saturday evening in a Class D North quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center.

The Pioneers (17-1 overall) advance to the semifinals 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Cross Insurance Center where they will face No. 3 Machias (14-4 overall).

Wisdom has not lost a game since a season-opening 29-26 loss to St. John Valley foe Fort Kent, a Class C opponent, on Dec. 10 and coach Scott Pelletier and the rest of the Pioneers were determined to continue that streak in Saturday’s game.

Pioneer Lilly Roy led all players with 30 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Abbie Lerman added 14 points, while Olivia Ouellette chipped in eight; Alexis Silva had five; Ava Lerman added four; and Kelsie Daigle had two.

The Pioneers jumped to a 9-0 lead to start the game and ended the first quarter on top 13-6. Katahdin tried chipping into the lead in the second quarter and got it down to 10 (27-17) at halftime. After three quarters, Wisdom was back on top comfortably, 42-23.

Having played Katahdin twice during the regular season, the Pioneers had a pretty good idea of what they would see in Saturday’s game.

“We knew what we were getting [from Katahdin],” Wisdom coach Pelletier said. “I thought we matched up pretty good in our man [defense]. We did some good things and we are a team that can do a bunch of different things.”

Makayla Hartsgrove led the Cougars with 13 points, followed by Hunter Hartsgrove with 10; Shelby Libby, seven; and Mickenzie Libby, two. Katahdin ends its season with a 9-10 overall record.

“The goal has always been to get the gold ball and we still have work to do,” coach Pelletier said. “We will take the next few days to practice and get ready for Machias.”
