A standoff with a Cornish man who allegedly broke his neighbor’s windows using a tractor and flattened his neighbor’s tires with a knife ended early Friday morning with the man being taken into custody, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office
The standoff started after York County sheriff deputies responded to a residence near 68 Spur Road in Cornish for a local disturbance at around 6:45 a.m. Thursday. They received reports that Edward Kalinoski, 66, appears to be armed with a handgun when he was seen damaging his neighbor’s property.
Police initially believed that Kalinoski’s alleged actions were a result of a landscaping disagreement, but further information indicated that they were unprovoked, according to the sheriff’s office.
Kalinoski reportedly retreated into his residence and did not respond to attempts from law enforcement to communicate.
As the result of prior police contacts with Kalinoski, responding law enforcement contacted the Southern Maine Special Response Team to manage tactical operations. Crisis negotiators and mental health first responders were deployed.
During the standoff, York County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant for Kalinoski’s home and an arrest warrant for charges including reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal threatening, criminal mischief and refusal to submit to arrest.
After efforts to communicate with Kalinoski were not productive, York Police Department canine team Sgt. Jon Rogers and K9 Gunther attempted to subdue him when it appeared that Kalinoski was unarmed, according to the sheriff’s office. However, Kalinoski had access to a knife and stabbed the dog in the rear left leg and rear inner right leg. Gunther was transported to the Scarborough Animal Hospital, where he was treated and released.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., almost 24 hours after the incident began, tactical members apprehended Kalinoski when he left the house armed with what was later determined to be a replica firearm. He was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
Spur Road from Joe Berry to Route 5 was closed during the standoff.
