Thank you to the BDN for the recent article about the Juneteenth event in Brewer at the Chamberlain Freedom Park on Monday. I’m sure that James Varner gave a rousing speech, and I found it impressive that the Brewer mayor was part of the festivities.
I was surprised, however, by the statement in the article that, “Most celebrations took place in the southern part of the state.” Not so. There was a large and festive gathering on June 19 to celebrate Juneteenth just down the road at the Knowlton Park in Ellsworth. The event was sponsored by local radio station WERU and other organizations. There was free food, music, speeches, singing and dancing. A good-sized crowd was there to join in. Miraculously, there was no rain!
Other than sports coverage, it feels to me that Ellsworth and surrounding communities sometimes get overlooked by the BDN. While we have our own newspapers, they are only weekly and many of us rely on the BDN for our news.
