The Maine Senate narrowly voted in favor of ending the sale of flavored tobacco.

The bill passed 18 to 16.

The bill now moves to the House for further discussion, which is expected in the coming days.

If passed, it would prohibit the sale of flavors like mint, vanilla, fruits and menthol.

The bill does not aim to penalize the use, purchase or possession of flavored tobacco products, but instead would focus on penalizing the licensed tobacco retailers.

In April, South Portland joined Portland, Brunswick and Bangor on the list of communities in Maine banning the sale of flavored tobacco.
