A vehicle chase that began in New Hampshire and caused two crashes in Maine ended with an injured Oxford County sheriff’s deputy and a shooting in downtown Fryeburg on Tuesday.

Emergency radio reports indicated there was a crash with entrapment and serious injuries reported just before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and state Route 113. A shooting there involved multiple police agencies, Oxford County Sheriff Christopher Wainwright said.

The deputy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a crash, he said. Details of the shooting were not immediately clear. The sheriff referred a reporter to Attorney General Aaron Frey’s office, which investigates incidents in which police use deadly force, for comment on the shooting.

Wainwright said it appears that the incident began in Conway, New Hampshire, which is adjacent to Fryeburg. There was a vehicle pursuit that carried over into Maine and resulted in at least two crashes, including the one reported in the middle of town.

The Maine State Police are investigating the crashes, Wainwright said. A spokesperson for that agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
