A Poland man has been found not criminally responsible by reason of insanity after he waived his right to a trial by pleading guilty to killing his brother.
Justin Butterfield was accused of killing his brother, 38-year-old Gabriel Damour, on Thanksgiving morning in 2022 at the home they shared in Poland.
In court documents, police reported that they found several items including a screwdriver and hypodermic needles sticking out of Damour’s body.
Police said Butterfield mutilated the body and left body parts on the front porch of his home.
Butterfield allegedly told police he had been fighting for 24 hours with “the Terminator” before slaying him.
Butterfield’s former girlfriend, Yaicha Provencher, said he suffers from serious mental health issues.
“When Justin comes to, he’s really going to be upset because he really, really loved his brother,” Provencher told CBS 13 in 2022.
According to Provencher, she started to see Butterfield’s mental health struggles hit a peak in 2018. Over the past four years, she made at least 10 calls to law enforcement and hospitals trying to get him long-term help.
Provencher said Butterfield was admitted to the hospital eight different times on an emergency basis, four of which were in 2022.
Butterfield pleaded guilty on Tuesday. The court ordered Butterfield to be committed to the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to be held at a state facility indefinitely.
