The 10th-seeded Mount Desert Island Trojans upset No. 2 Maranacook 60-52 in the Class B North boys quarterfinals on Friday night, forcing 24 Black Bear turnovers and winning their first tournament game since 2018.

The Trojans (10-10) previously upset No. 7 Bucksport 53-46 in the B North preliminary round on Wednesday, to clinch their first tournament appearance since 2020.

It was a total team effort for MDI on Friday night, with six different Trojans scoring between eight and 16 points. Up against Maranacook’s fierce half-court press, senior guards Spencer Laurendeau (14 points, five assists, three steals) and Joey Wellman-Clouse (three points, four assists, one steal) did a great job distributing cross-court passes, and down low senior Shane Lumbatis was a technician, scoring 16 and tallying four defensive takeaways.

Maranacook senior guard Keagan McClure — younger brother of 2021 Maine Mr. Basketball Cash McClure — led all Black Bears with 16 points (three 3-pointers), and senior guard Brandon Chilton tacked on 11 points (three 3-pointers), three assists and five offensive rebounds.

Maranacook made four of its eight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter — helping cut a 48-26 deficit down to as little as seven — but MDI kept the favorites at bay with some efficient foul shooting, going 22-for-28 from the stripe.
