A man was arrested and charged with murder after police said he shot and killed another man early Saturday and sent law enforcement scrambling to find the suspect.
Portland police were called to a commercial area on St. John Street just after 1 a.m. Saturday on a report that someone had been shot. They found 30-year-old Raoul Mapendo Tshiyuka of Portland injured. He was taken to nearby Maine Medical Center and later died, Portland police spokesperson Robert Martin said in a statement.
Investigators quickly identified 35-year-old Abdirahman Mahmoud as a person of interest in the shooting. His car was located by South Portland police in a residential area, leading a SWAT team to the home. Mahmoud was not at the South Portland home.
The city of South Portland issued a Saturday statement saying the vehicle belonged to a homicide suspect but later told reporters the statement was issued prematurely.
Portland police later conducted what they called a “high-risk” search warrant in the Wellesley Estates off Forest Avenue in Portland. Mahmoud was not there either, but he contacted police to tell him he was at an Ocean Avenue home.
He was taken into custody there without incident, Martin said. Mahmoud was charged with murder and is being held at the Cumberland County jail without bail.
