The Bangor Region YMCA has been awarded $5 million in federal funding through the 2024 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who is vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced the funding on Monday.

The money go toward a planned 30,000-square-foot Comprehensive Health Center that will host programs related to infants, early education and after-school care, a food pantry and public health. The programs will aim to “address issues such as loneliness and isolation,” according to the YMCA.

The award came from more than $577 million secured by Sen. Collins for Maine organizations through the federal appropriations process.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misidentified the $577 million. The amount represents only those appropriations that were secured by Sen. Susan Collins.
