What makes a boat, a boat? Is it anything that floats? Must it be able to safely convey humans without sinking? Is it anything that travels on water?
Some Mainers have pushed that question to its limit, by building boats out of just about anything. Pontoon boats constructed of little more than styrofoam, plywood and an outboard motor. Boats that are, essentially, floating tiny homes, perhaps made to skirt shoreline zoning restrictions. Do-it-yourself outrigger canoes and kayaks. Boats made of soda cans. Floating picnic tables. You get the idea.
Seaworthy or not, we want to hear about the wildest DIY boats you’ve ever encountered in Maine. It could be something you built yourself, something a friend or family member made, or even something you just happened to see out one day. It could be a heavily altered existing boat, or one made entirely from scratch. It could still exist, or she could have sunk on her maiden voyage.
