The Buffalo Wild Wings location near Interstate 95 in Bangor was hit by a suspected lightning strike on Sunday evening that knocked out power and forced it to close early.

Customers outside the Stillwater Avenue restaurant told employees that sparks flew off the building just after 5 p.m. while isolated thunderstorms and showers rolled through Bangor, according to a person who answered the restaurant’s phone but declined to be named.

Power was lost just after people inside heard thunder directly above, the employee said.

“It was pretty much instantaneous,” they said.

Electricity was briefly knocked out to other businesses and remained out for Buffalo Wild Wings until just after 7 p.m., said the employee, who was on the phone with a reporter when it came back on.

The restaurant was the only outage in Bangor around 7 p.m., according to Versant Power’s outage map. There was no reported damage to the building.

The National Weather Service was forecasting scattered showers and thunderstorms into this evening. Locally heavy rainfall is possible in the area, with the possibility of flooding in low-lying or poor drainage areas. There is a small chance of localized flash flooding.
