The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for a snowstorm that’s expected to sweep the state between late Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon.
The snow will be followed by bitter cold temperatures in some portions of the state.
In Downeast Maine and the Penobscot valley, the winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday.
Heavy snow is expected, with wind gusts as high as 30 to 35 mph, with snow falling up to 1 to 2 inches per hour in the heaviest bands of the storm. Between 6 and 9 inches of snow are expected.
Then, very cold weather is expected Monday through Wednesday, with wind chills of 20 to 30 below zero likely on Monday and Tuesday night. Temperatures will slowly creep up toward the end of the week, according to the weather service.
In more southern sections of Maine, the storm warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday, with a total of 4 to 8 inches of snow expected.
The weather service also warned that Monday’s commute could be affected by the snowy conditions.
