Federal funding of $50 million for a new airplane hangar at the Maine Air National Guard base in Bangor has been officially confirmed by the Department of Defense, Sen. Susan Collins’ office announced on Friday.

The funding was included in the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, which passed into law on March 15.

The lump sums allotted to the Department of Defense in the bill have now been allocated to specific projects, including the hangar in Bangor.

The existing hangar at the Maine Air National Guard base in Bangor was designed for the guard’s 101st Air Refueling Wing’s existing KC-135 aerial refueling tankers, according to Collins’ office.

The $50 million in funding will go toward building a new universal fuel cell hangar that can accommodate the Wing’s existing airplane and future generation tankers.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the funding was an earmark. It was in fact included in the Fiscal Year 2025 full-year continuing resolution.
