NORTH WINDHAM — Investigators say they found the body of a suspect accused of shooting and killing a man in North Windham.

The Maine Department of Public Safety identified 48-year old James Ford of Windham as the suspect. They believe Ford left his apartment shortly before the shooting.

They say the Windham Police Department responded to the intersection of Roosevelt Trail and Landing Road just before 2 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, officers found 33-year old Erin Hayne suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene after witnesses attempted life-saving measures.

Witnesses told investigators that a male on a motorcycle pulled up next to Hayne and fired multiple shots at him. Then investigators say witnesses in a U-Haul truck followed the shooter’s vehicle, and called 911.

The witnesses provided the license plate number to dispatchers. The U-Haul driver eventually lost sight of the vehicle near the Raymond and Windham town line.

Cumberland County Sheriff deputies say they located the suspect’s vehicle behind the Dunkin on Route 302 in Raymond, but it was unoccupied. After a police dog search, they say they located Ford’s body.

State troopers say Ford’s body was found with a single gunshot wound. They say there is no known connection between Hayne and Ford.

The Maine State Police is still investigating the incident. They are asking anyone who was traveling on Route 302 during the time of the incident and may have video to call them.
