One person died in a house fire in Skowhegan on Tuesday afternoon.

At about 5:02 p.m., the Skowhegan Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire with possible entrapment at a residence at 31 Waye St.

Firefighters attempted a rescue but were met with heavy fire conditions, the fire marshal’s office said in a news release. An adult was later found dead inside the house.

The deceased will be taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to be identified. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the fire marshal’s office said.
