The town of Thomaston is closing a waterfront park to dogs in an effort to reduce contamination in the St. George River.
The dog ban at Mill River Park takes effect May 1 and will continue for one year. It applies to all dogs regardless of whether they are on a leash.
“Recent findings from the Maine Department of Marine Resources indicate that microbial contamination levels are approaching regulatory limits, with evidence suggesting pet waste may be contributing to water quality impacts in the area,” the town manager said in a notice.
During the closure, the town plans to monitor water quality in the river to see if it improves.
Fines for breaking the ban start at $50 for a first offense and $100 for subsequent violations.
The town encouraged residents looking for an alternative place to take their pets to visit the Thomaston Dog Park, located at 21 Dwight St.
