Firefighters are often the first ones to walk into danger when duty calls.

But they respond to more than just five-alarm fires and mangled car wrecks.

On Sunday, Wells firefighters were called to Aubuchon Hardware on Post Road for a leaking 1,000-pound propane tank, according to the union representing the town’s firefighters.

Crews quickly evacuated Aubuchon and its neighbor, Borealis Breads. But the firefighters forgot a crucial detail: Aubuchon’s resident cat, Tiny, was still inside.

Firefighter Sean Connell returned inside to fetch the feline, much to the relief of his fans. Whether he parlays that rescue into a future as a “professional cat wrangler.”

That wasn’t the end of their duty, however. Firefighters learned that Borealis Breads needed to get its dough into the walk-in cooler within minutes or else spoil Monday’s business. So two firefighters helped get the dough into the cooler.

“Some days it’s fire attack and emergency response. Other days it’s rescuing cats and saving bread dough,” the union wrote in a social media post.
