A child who was seriously injured by a lawnmower in the Penobscot County town of Kenduskeag on Thursday evening remains in critical condition, according to police.

The accident was reported at about 6 p.m., according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, who said initial reports indicated that a 3-year-old boy had been accidentally run over by a riding lawn tractor and sustained life-threatening injuries.

First responders took lifesaving measures and gave emergency medical care until the child could be transported. Medical staff at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center were able to stabilize the child before he was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to a Boston-area hospital, where he remains in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said on Friday evening.
