The rainbow Pride flag painted on a downtown Bangor street is already defaced.

The rainbow flag is painted near a crosswalk on State Street every year for Pride month, which is in June.

The tire marks and burnout marks start on the rainbow flag and lead away, a Bangor Daily News reporter saw Monday, the first day of the celebratory month for LGBTQ+ communities. There are also additional narrow markings throughout the stripes.

The rainbow was painted late last week. The flag is painted near where three teenagers killed Charlie Howard for being openly gay on July 7, 1984.

“The city finds it disappointing that some would be destructive in their behavior,” spokesperson David Warren said. “We can choose to do good things for one another or choose to be destructive; let’s always opt for the former.”

Bangor City Council historically issues a proclamation declaring June as Pride Month in Bangor. It’s scheduled to meet next on June 8.

This year’s Pride parade and festival is planned for June 27.
