A man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in Carabassatt Valley in March has pleaded not guilty, WGME reported.

Austin Doucette, 24, is charged with murder in the shooting death of Makayla Rose Desantis, 23, on March 8 at a condominium near Sugarloaf Ski Resort, where the couple worked.

Desantis had dated Doucette since 2018 and moved to Maine from Connecticut in 2024, court records said. She worked at 45 North, a restaurant located in the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel.

Friends, family members and coworkers said Doucette had previously threatened Desantis, was verbally and emotionally abusive, and kept guns and ammunition in the apartment, according to court documents.

According to warrants included in court records, a man called 911 from Desantis’ cell phone to report the shooting, saying it was accidental, that “I can’t believe I did this” and “I’m sorry babe.”
