The Yarmouth High School girls track team claimed its first state Class B title and the York boys their seventh B crown and eighth overall in Freeport on Saturday.
The Yarmouth girls tallied 101 points to finish 19 points higher than runner-up Freeport. Completing the top 10 in the 26-team field were Greely of Cumberland Center (77), York (56), Mount Desert Island (47), Old Town (43), Hermon (36.5), Leavitt of Turner (31), Presque Isle (29.5) and Nokomis of Newport (26).
In the boys meet, York registered 93 points to outdistance Greely by 20, followed by Cony of Augusta (58), Freeport (56), Leavitt (41), Caribou (39), John Bapst of Bangor (38), Lawrence of Fairfield (37) and Mount Desert Island (35).
In the girls meet, Yarmouth was sparked by senior Ella Cameron, who won the javelin (1-21-01) and the discus (114-05) and was fourth in the shot put behind winner Angelina Boisvert of Nokomis (38-07.25).
Yarmouth’s Miah Jacobs won the 100 meter dash in 12:20, and teammate Hayden Aines won the long jump in 18-03.
The other individual winners were Gardiner’s Natalie Grant in the 1600 race walk (8:05:08), Ellsworth’s Caitlin Jenkins in the 100 hurdles (15:35), York’s Zoe Carroll in the 1600 run (4:58.41), Erskine Academy of South China’s Sovie Rau in the 400 (57:05), Greely’s Victoria Zandan in the 300 hurdles (45.85) and Rowan Barry in the 800 (2:17.46), MDI’s Seneca Haney in the 200 (24.74), Karen Higgins of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle in the 3200 (11:07.45), Old Town’s Elyannah Briggs in the high jump (5-06), Hermon’s Daijha Grant in the triple jump (37-08.75) and Greely’s Piper Higgins in the pole vault (10-0).
Briggs broke a meet record dating back to 1977, and Grant snapped one that had existed for 29 years.
Yarmouth’s 4 by 100 relay team also broke a meet record with a time of 49:30. The team consisted of Abby Noble, Aines, Lilah Pernal and Jacobs.
MDI’s team of Ella O’Connell, Cora Van Dongen, Marlee Cantanese and Haney won the 4 by 400 in 4:04.39, and Freeport’s team of Ella Oshetski, Stella Kayzdak, Maddy York and Lucy Huggett captured the 4 by 800 in 9:53:82.
In the boys meet, York received first-place showings from Jackson Walker in the 110 hurdles (15.75) and William Fagan in the shot put (53-04.50).
Freeport’s Alex Gilbert and Leavitt’s Mason Henderson were the only participants with two individual victories as Gilbert won the 1600 (4:29.51) and the 3200 (9:49.25) and Henderson claimed the 400 (49.71) and the 200 (22.17). He set the meet record in the 200.
The other individual winners were Erskine Academy’s Luke Blair in the 1600 race walk (8:04:05), Greely’s Kannon Crocker in the 300 hurdles (40:15), John Bapt’s Gavin Rogers in the 800 (1:57.58), Ellsworth’s Boris Felix in the high jump (6-02), Cony’s Shaquan Fellows in the long jump (20-09.75), Erskine Academy’s Elijah Pelkey in the triple jump (43-01.5), Belfast’s Minh Ha in the javelin (164-06), MDI’s Joseph Bennett in the discus (158-05) and teammate Patrick Saltysiak in the pole vault (13-06).
The relay winners were Cony in the 4-by-100 with a team of Ethan Demmons, Carter Braithwaite, Fellows and Joseph Knapp clocking a meet record time of 45:03; Cony in the 4-by-400 with Demmons, Judah Bickford, Braithwaite and Knapp posting a time of 3:30.41; and the John Bapst 4 by 800 team comprised of Benedict Hoskins, Mason Read, Beckham Rand and Rogers.
