A Massachusetts man allegedly trafficked cocaine in the Belfast area.

Juan Antonio Arias Almonte, 31, of Dorchester was charged with aggravated drug trafficking, according to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

His arrest comes after a monthslong investigation into the trafficking of narcotics into the Belfast area from Massachusetts, the agency said Thursday morning.

Agents learned Wednesday that Almonte was on his way to Belfast with a “significant amount” of cocaine, according to the MDEA.

Almonte was found in a Belfast parking lot, where agents searched his vehicle, turning up nearly 6 ounces of cocaine hidden in the vehicle’s headliner.

The cocaine was worth about $17,000.

Almonte was taken to the Waldo County Jail, where his bail was set at $50,000.

More arrests are expected.
