Right now is a great time to set up trail cameras, whether you’re preparing for hunting season or simply curious about what wildlife is passing through.

And who doesn’t love seeing footage of a doe with her fawns?

Benjamin Lacouette, an avid outdoorsman, bowhunter and owner of a wildlife removal and repair business, has about 15 WiseEye trail cameras in the Biddeford area of York County. One recently captured video of a doe with two fawns, one of which is piebald.

Piebald deer have a genetic mutation that causes some areas of their coat to lack pigment, creating distinctive white patches. While they aren’t as rare as albino or leucistic deer, they’re still uncommon in much of Maine, making sightings exciting for hunters and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Lacouette said he’s seen only a few piebald deer over the years, despite spending so much time in the woods.
