I am very disturbed by all the shootings and deaths caused by ICE agents. The latest one on Monday occurred in Maine. The person was shot in his car and it has turned out he was not the intended target. He was working in Maine legally, had a Social Security number, a wife and a young child. People have been protesting in Biddeford where the shooting took place and in other locations as well.
This past April after Congress, including Sen. Susan Collins, had voted to adopt a $70 billion budget plan to fund ICE and Border Control, Collins was asked by WMTW reporter Bonnie Bishop why the senator had voted in favor of this bill. Collins replied: “It’s not fair to the Department of Homeland Security’s employees to have this cloud of uncertainty over whether or not they are going to be paid. They are keeping us safe.”
These agents are supposed to be wearing body cameras, but the ones in Maine were not. The ICE shooter in Texas where another person died, but was not the intended target, also wasn’t wearing a body camera. I question whether the intended targets were violent criminals.
People are dying needlessly and Collins seems to think the well paid, dangerously armed agents who face little or no consequences for their deadly actions are keeping us safe. Not in my opinion. Far from it!
