A person incarcerated at the Cumberland County Jail was found unresponsive in their cell late Friday night and could not be revived, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

A correctional officer discovered the individual during routine security rounds at approximately 11:03 p.m. Officers initiated emergency procedures and began lifesaving measures, according to a press release. A Portland medical response team assisted, but efforts were unsuccessful.

The name of the inmate was not disclosed.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, jail officials said in the release.

The Portland Police Department, the Maine Department of Corrections, the medical examiner’s office and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are investigating. No more information about the individual is being released at this time.
