A box truck crashed on Interstate 295 in South Portland early Monday morning when the driver swerved to avoid three deer.
Jose Cancel, 40, of Newport, Rhode Island, was driving the box truck laden with household goods north on I-295, near mile marker 2, about 4 a.m. when he swerved to avoid the deer in the road, according to Maj. Aaron Turcotte, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Cancel hit the median guardrail, overturned and came to a rest in the southbound travel lane, Turcotte said Monday.
The driver wasn’t injured in the crash, which spilled his cargo across the road.
One lane of the road remained closed mid-morning Monday.
