A 36-year-old man was charged with murder on Monday for allegedly bludgeoning his mother to death with a hammer last week in a California home.

Safford James Wolfson is accused of killing 61-year-old Angela Caprioli, whom multiple media reports identify as being from Maine.

Caprioli was found dead in a Laguna Beach home on the morning of July 20. Wolfson, who was reportedly found covered in blood on the floor of the home, was quickly named a person of interest. Police arrested him on July 23, according to the Orange County Register.

Wolfson’s grandmother allegedly called police after coming to the home and finding broken furniture and blood everywhere, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Caprioli was found dead in a bedroom with severe injuries to her head and face. Wolfson had self-inflicted injuries on his neck, according to the Register.
